RARE 'GEORGE ASTOR & CO.' FLAGIOLET* London, circa 1800 Grenadilla or ebony, ivory rings, original brass keys. L. 60.5 cm. Marked 'George Astor & Co.,' 'London,' and 'Patent.' A rare English flageolet by the renowned London instrument maker George Astor (1752-1813). The flageolet, a member of the beak flute family, was a popular woodwind instrument for refined domestic music in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was particularly widespread in England and France. Condition: worn and well-used, hairline cracks; functionality not tested. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse. CITES marketing certificate is available.
