SET OF THREE KALIMBAS / MBIRAS Africa, probably Tanzania, 20th century Wooden soundboard, freely vibrating metal tongues, one with a carved head at one end. L. 18, 24.5, 29.5 cm. Three traditional African lamellophones, consisting of three kalimbas or mbiras of different designs. The instruments feature wooden soundboxes with attached metal tongues that are struck with the thumbs, producing a characteristically bright sound rich in overtones. In fair condition, with age-related signs of wear. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
