Description
ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active in the 17th/18th centuries HEAD OF A SATYR AND CHILD'S BUST Probably Rome Carrara marble, sculpted, each on a pedestal. Total height 46/44, width 23/26, depth 21/15 cm, weight approx. 20.28/11.84 kg. Child's bust in the style of François Duquesnoy (1597-1643). An interesting ensemble of two Baroque marble sculptures from an Italian context. The satyr's head displays the combination of human and animal features typical of ancient mythology and alludes to the Dionysian iconography. The expressive modeling and lively physiognomy lend the figure a striking presence. Stylistically, the child's bust follows in the tradition of the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy, who was one of the most important representatives of the classical Baroque in Rome. His famous depictions of putti and children were characterized by a particular naturalness and grace. Condition: old restoration, weathered surface; the child's bust has fractures.
