Description
LARGE STATUE OF SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON Southern Germany or Tyrol, late 15th century Linden wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded; hollowed out on the back. H. 127, W. 45, D. 25 cm. Large late-Gothic depiction of Saint George battling the dragon. The dragon slayer appears as a Christian knight and a symbol of the victory of faith over evil. The dynamic rendering of the figure, the richly detailed movement, and the meticulous craftsmanship of the armor and dragon attest to the high quality of South German and Tyrolean woodcarving in the late 15th century. Condition: some loss of paint, paint partially worn away, minor chips, and stress cracks.
