Description
MARY FROM A CRUCIFIXION GROUP Franconia, Southern Germany, early 16th century Linden wood, sculpted in relief, flattened and hollowed on the back, with remnants of old polychrome paint. H. 82, W. 23, D. 16 cm, weight approx. 3.5 kg. Late Gothic figure of the Virgin Mary, originally part of a crucifixion group. The Mother of God appears in quiet mourning and devotion as a witness to the Passion of Christ. The softly flowing folds of the robe, the slender figure, and the finely modeled facial features are characteristic of Franconian woodcarving of the early 16th century. Condition: worn and damaged, restored, stress cracks, woodworm infestation. Provenance: Acquired at König Auction House, Nuremberg.
