Description
TILMAN RIEMENSCHNEIDER (WORKSHOP OR CIRCLE) CRUCIFIX Franconia, ca. 1500 Linden wood, sculpted, polychromed, and gilded; polychromy partially retouched, later cross. H. 72, W. 63, D. 15 cm, total height 103 cm. Presumably from the workshop or circle of Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1460-1531). High-quality late Gothic Corpus Christi from a Franconian workshop around 1500, stylistically likely from the circle of Tilman Riemenschneider. The finely modeled anatomy, the sensitive treatment of the flesh tones, and the facial expression marked by quiet suffering correspond to the artistic trends of Franconian woodcarving at the turn of the modern era. Particularly characteristic are the balanced body proportions and the restrained yet poignant depiction of Christ's suffering. Tilman Riemenschneider ranks among the most significant sculptors of the German Late Gothic period. His workshop in Würzburg shaped the artistic landscape of Franconia for decades and influenced numerous woodcarvers in the region. In good condition and described; restored; paint partially renewed; minor losses. Expert opinion: Correspondence regarding the art-historical classification between Dr. Schönberger and Dr. Krohm, State Museums of Prussian Culture, Berlin, 1984, and Dr. Schädler, Bavarian National Museum, 1982. Provenance: Formerly the Föhr Collection, Eltville; originally probably owned by Auxiliary Bishop Heimer, Hoffenheim?
