Description
CHRIST ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES Probably Franconia, southern Germany, early 16th century. Linden wood, sculpted in the round, polychromed, flattened on the back. H. 59, W. 28, D. 34 cm, weight approx. 6.34 kg. A rare late-Gothic depiction of Christ on the Mount of Olives in prayer before his arrest. The scene is one of the most poignant moments in the Passion narrative and shows Christ in deep devotion and inner struggle before his suffering. The upward gaze and concentrated facial expression lend the figure a powerful emotional impact. The sculpture impressively conveys the piety and visual language of early 16th-century Franconian woodcarving. Condition: cracks due to stress, restored, loss of paint. Provenance: Acquired at the Amundi? auction house, Wiesbaden.
