Description
SAINT SEBASTIAN Franconia, Southern Germany, early 16th century Linden wood, sculpted and stained, flattened on the back, mounted on a pedestal and a console. H. 62, W. 22, D. 16 cm, Wt. approx. 1.88 kg. Late Gothic depiction of Saint Sebastian, one of the most popular patron saints against the plague and as a protector in the Middle Ages. The martyr is shown tied to a tree trunk, his gaze slightly lowered, in a calm, composed posture. The slender physique, the softly flowing modeling, and the restrained expressiveness are characteristic of Franconian woodcarving of the early 16th century. Preserved and described, restored, affected by woodworm, missing sections on the hands. Provenance: Acquired at the Herken Auction House, Wiesbaden.
