Description
BERLIN SCULPTORS Active in the early 20th century BUST OF A YOUNG MAN Berlin, first half of the 20th century Bronze, dark brown patina, on a rectangular wooden base. H. 24, W. 13, D. 16 cm. Foundry mark on the side: 'H. Noack, Berlin-Friedenau'. A powerfully expressive, vividly modeled bust of a young man wearing a close-fitting head covering. The lively, impasto modeling of the facial features and the sketch-like treatment of the surfaces lend the depiction an immediate presence. The execution at the renowned Noack art foundry in Berlin-Friedenau points to the circle of Berlin sculpture in the first half of the 20th century. Stylistically, the work stands between Impressionism and moderate Modernism and is compelling for its characterful conception. Stylistically, the work is reminiscent of the Berlin Secession and artists associated with Georg Kolbe (1877-1947), Arthur Lewin-Funcke (1866-1937), Richard Scheibe (1879-1964), or Fritz Klimsch (1870-1960). Partial wear and loss of patina.
