Description
HANS ZÜRN THE YOUNGER 1585 Waldsee? - after 1624 Buchhorn IMPORTANT APOSTLE GROUP Upper Swabia, around 1610/20 Lime wood, sculpted, carved, gilded, polychrome. H. 55/92/73, W approx. 100, D 28/30 cm. Attributed to Hans Zürn the Younger. High-quality group of apostles from the early Baroque period in Upper Swabia, consisting of fully rounded carved half and three-quarter figures with lively drapery and expressive heads. The dynamic posture, the deep folds of the robes, and the striking physiognomy of the figures correspond to the typical stylistic features of the Zürn family of sculptors, who were among the most important representatives of early 17th-century South German woodcarving. The group is attributed to the younger Hans Zürn, who was particularly active in the Allgäu and Upper Swabia regions. In its unity and artistic quality, the group of apostles represents a museum-worthy testimony to South German sacred art at the threshold between the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Partially preserved, loss of material, rest., hands partially supplemented. Literature: See von Manteuffel: Die Bildhauerfamilie Zürn 1606-1666, Weißenhorn, 1969. Provenance: Private collection, southern Germany.
