ENTHRONED MOTHER OF GOD WITH THE CHILD JESUS Rhineland, early 14th century Oak wood, sculpted, polychrome, flattened on the back. H. 53.5, W. 24, D. 13 cm, weight approx. 4.97 kg. Depiction of the enthroned Mother of God with the Christ Child, represented as Sedes Sapientiae (seat of wisdom) on a block-like throne, holding the child on her knee in a blessing gesture. The figurative elaboration and the drapery are based on the idealized Madonna types of the Rhineland, as they were widespread in the Bonn and Cologne areas at the beginning of the 14th century. Partially preserved and losses to the painting, damaged, attributes missing, tension crack on the reverse, minimal Anobium infestation (inactive).
