Description
A MONUMENTAL AND VERY FINE ICON WITH AN EXTENDED DEESIS FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, Yaroslavl, late 17th century Tempera on wood panel, partial gilding, partial silvering glazed in gold. The composition depicts a Deesis with the enthroned Christ, flanked by the Mother of God, John the Baptist, and angels, further enriched by the holy princes of Yaroslavl: Prince-Monk Feodor Rostislavich with his sons David and Konstantin, as well as Prince Vasily with his brother Konstantin. This representation, emphasizing the collective intercession of the Yaroslavl wonderworkers, is typical of local veneration and was likely created for a church in Yaroslavl. Stylistically, the icon combines elements of Moscow Armoury painting with decorative coloring and forms reflecting Kostroma influences. It was probably executed by a Kostroma master active in Yaroslavl, thus uniting features of two major artistic traditions of the Volga region. Partially restored. 79.8 x 106.7 cm.
