Description
FINE AND RARE VIOLIN BOW 'H.R. PFRETZSCHNER' PROF. HENRI PETRI* Markneukirchen, 1905 Round stick, single eye, silver mount, winding, thumb leather, ivory head plate. L. 74.2, weight approx. 60g. Violin bow marked 'H.R. Pfretzschner' and 'Prof. Henri Petri', stamp in the frog. Henri Wilhelm Petri (1856-1914) was a Dutch-German violinist, conductor, and respected teacher. Born in Utrecht, he studied with Joseph Joachim in Berlin and later became concertmaster in Leipzig and Dresden, as well as professor at the Royal Conservatory in Dresden and later at the court in The Hague. Petri was considered an outstanding musician with great influence on the German violin school. Due to his reputation, the name Prof. Henri Petri was used in Markneukirchen around 1900 for high-quality commercial bows manufactured in the workshop of the renowned bow maker Hermann Richard Pfretzschner (1857-1921). These bows stood for the best Saxon craftsmanship and were made specifically for professional musicians. Although Henri Petri did not make the bows himself, his name lent the brand a high reputation.
