Indistinctly monogrammed lower right "P.B. .. i.:.`". Min. old rest., part. min. old retouching, cracks with paint losses, min. dam. Frame. The intimate depiction of the Madonna with the Christ Child and the Infant Saint John stands in close proximity to the Roman-Florentine High Renaissance. The balanced triangular composition, the gentle idealisation of the physiognomies, and the calm landscape opening in the background point to the influence of Raphael and his circle. The softly modelled flesh tones and the poetic, almost lyrical conception of the Virgin in particular recall the Emilian school around Francesco Francia, whose Madonna type is characterised by quiet intimacy and delicate transitions. The restrained palette with muted blues and earth tones corresponds to the painting of the early Cinquecento in Northern Italy. Provenance: Rhenish private collection.
