Description
ERNST BARLACH (AFTER) 1870 Wedel - 1938 Rostock RUSSIAN BEGGAR II Bronze, dark patina. H. 23, W. 42, D. 17 cm, weight approx. 8.58 kg. Marked 'E. Barlach' on the back, posthumous casting. Expressive depiction of a seated beggar in an introverted posture, embodying existential poverty. The posthumous casting follows Barlach's deliberately reduced formal language, which is characterized by block-like volumes and a closed silhouette. The motif of Russian beggars goes back to impressions that Ernst Barlach gained during his trip to Russia in 1906. Minor repairs and loss of patina. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin.
