Description
ENTHRONED MADONNA WITH THE CHILD JESUS Cologne, around 1450 Probably lime wood or fruit wood, sculpted, polychrome, flattened and hollowed out on the back. H. 48, W. 19, D. 12 cm, weight approx. 1.54 kg. Highly revered figure of the enthroned Madonna with the Child, a main motif of late medieval Rhineland woodcarving. Mary is depicted on a simple box throne, holding the Christ Child on her knee. In the classic gesture of the so-called Sedes Sapientiae (seat of wisdom), she embodies both the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven. Partially damaged and repaired, tension cracks, restored, minimal woodworm damage (inactive). Provenance: From the Benno Geron Engel Collection, Munich - Lempertz Auction, 1953 - Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
