Description
MUSEUM-QUALITY AND SIGNIFICANT THRONED MOTHER OF GOD WITH THE CHILD JESUS Catalonia, around 1200/1250 Poplar wood, sculpted, gilded and polychromed, hollowed out and flattened on the back. H. 75, W. 25, W 21 cm. Expressive, enthroned depiction of Mary with the Christ Child on her lap, created during the transition from the Romanesque to the early Gothic period. The strictly frontal composition, the block-like structure and the dignified, calm posture refer to the Byzantine-influenced type of Sedes sapientiae ('seat of wisdom'). Mary wears a long, flowing robe with stylised folds and holds the blessing Christ Child. Partial loss of paint and damage, loss of left hand, tension cracks, old Anobium infestation (inactive), frame largely original (partially repaired). Provenance: Private collection in the Rhineland. Private collection in western Switzerland from the Château de Courtaney à Avry, Fribourg.
