Description
POLISH SCULPTOR 'JOSEPH MANZEL' Active in the 19th century MONUMENTAL MARBLE SCULPTURE: ARMOR SEATED ON A SPHERE Probably Poland, Warsaw, 1865 Marble, fully modeled. H. 198, W. 58, D. 58 cm. Inscription on the underside of the sphere: 'Jos. Manzel da Varsavia Sculps 1865'. Monumental marble composition with a winged armour sitting on a stylised sphere, carrying a quiver with arrows on his back. The twelve signs of the zodiac are faintly indicated around the sphere. The high pillar base is decorated with antique relief figures - gods, heroes or personified virtues. The inscription on the underside indicates a Polish sculptor, probably Joseph (or Josef) Manzel, who was active in the second half of the 19th century. Partially preserved and damaged, base corroded, traces of weathering. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
