MEMENTO MORI SHRINE WITH EIGHT SKULLS Germany or Austria, 19th century Wood, carved in high relief, polychromed and gilded, framed behind glass. 36.5 x 27 cm. An expressive Memento Mori sculpture featuring two round-arched niches arranged one above the other, containing three skulls in the upper section and five in the lower, all carved in high relief. This striking depiction follows the tradition of Baroque vanitas symbolism and alludes to the transience of life. Part. bumped and loss of paint.
