Description
MEMENTO MORI: 'DEATH WITH A SCYTHE AND MAN' Germany or Austria, 19th century Carved wood, polychrome finish, gilding. H. 94, W. 32, D. 27 cm. An expressive, two-part Memento Mori sculpture featuring a skeleton that symbolizes the transience of life and the inevitability of death. Contrasting with this is the figure of a man-representing the finite nature of earthly existence-who confronts this inescapable fate within his own fleeting life. This striking depiction follows the tradition of Baroque *vanitas* symbolism, highlighting the transience of life. Shows minor knocks and damage; restored; some rubbing to the gilding.
