LARGE FIGURE OF DEATH WITH SCYTHE German, 18th century Wood, carved in the round, stained, on a base; formerly hollowed out. H. 152, W. 45, D. 30 cm. Standing figure of Death personified, clad in long, voluminous robes. A realistically carved skull emerges from the drapery that envelops the head like a hood. The figure holds a large scythe in its left hand and an open book in its right-likely the Book of Life or Book of the Dead-alluding to Baroque *vanitas* and *memento mori* symbolism and the transience of all earthly life. Shows signs of wear and damage; restored; tension cracks; additions to the back.
