'LAMENTATIO CHRISTI' NEOPOLITAN MOURNING GROUP Naples, around 1700 Poplar wood, sculpted, polychrome, on a rock-like base. H. 41, W. 51, D. 33 cm, weight approx. 6 kg. Probably workshop of Giacomo Colombo (1663-1730). Expressive lamentation group depicting the mourning Mary holding the body of Christ in her lap. At his feet kneels Mary Magdalene in a bright yellow robe, as a deeply mourning disciple and penitent. The scene is flanked by the Apostle John in a red robe and an accompanying putto. The rock-like natural base and the shroud spread out in the foreground lend the composition a remarkable plastic depth. Partially preserved, loss of material. Provenance: Private collection, southern Germany.
