LARGE MOURNING VIRGIN FROM A CRUCIFIXION GROUP (MATER DOLOROSA) Germany or Austria, c. 1500 Limewood, carved in the round, polychrome finish; flattened and hollowed out at the back. H. 96, W. 37, D. 24 cm. Depiction of the mourning Mother of God, her hands clasped in prayer and her head slightly raised, bearing an expression of sorrow. She is dressed in a long red undergarment, a white headscarf, and a blue mantle draped over her head and shoulders. Minor chipping and losses to the polychromy; damaged; some signs of woodworm infestation.
