SAINT JOHN THE APOSTLE WITH BOOK Southern Germany, around 1500 Linden wood, sculpted, gilded and polychrome, flattened and hollowed out on the back. H. 64.5, W. 20, 14 cm, weight approx. 4 kg. Expressive depiction of St. John in a fine late Gothic style. The youthfully idealized apostle is depicted in a slight contrapposto pose, with a calm expression and a softly flowing robe. The curly hair, delicate features, and finely articulated hands testify to the high quality of craftsmanship. The figure wears a long robe, the folds of which are draped rhythmically over the shoulders and body. Partially preserved and loss of material, restored, minimal woodworm damage (inactive). Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
