SAINT JULIANA OF NIKOMEDIA / CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA Netherlands, 15th century Oak, sculpted, dark stained, flattened on the back, on a pedestal. H. 49, W. 16, 14.5 cm, weight approx. 2.83 kg. Devotional figure of Saint Juliana / Catherine. Depicted in an upright posture with her head slightly bowed, a humble expression on her face and the folds of her cloak flowing gracefully. Below the main figure, on the base, is a sculpted bearded man looking up at her. Probably a representation of the pagan emperor Maxentius or a philosopher over whom Catherine triumphed according to legend. Partially damaged and repaired, tension cracks, minor Anobium infestation (inactive). Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
