Description
A VERY RARE BIEDERMEIER SECRÉTAIRE WITH THE INSIGNIA OF THE RUSSO-PRUSSIAN MILITARY ALLIANCE German, circa 1815 Birchwood, polished, ebonised wood, decorative Schwarzlot painting. An important secrétaire with fold-down writing surface and three wide drawers. The upper panel is decorated with two rural town views featuring half-timbered houses, figures, and landscape. The interior comprises six small drawers and two side compartments. The door panels are adorned with portraits of King Frederick William III of Prussia (reigned 1797-1840) and Tsar Alexander I of Russia (reigned 1801-1825). The lower section bears a mythological depiction of a warrior. Two keys present. 164 x 103 x 53 cm. In the spring of 1813, Tsar Alexander I of Russia and King Frederick William III of Prussia formed an alliance at the Treaty of Kalisch. Together with Austria and further allies, they established the Sixth Coalition to overthrow Napoleonic rule in Europe. The cooperation of the two monarchs marked a decisive step in the reordering of Europe, culminating in the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
