Description
A RARE AND LARGE VITA ICON OF ST. MEMNON THE WONDERWORKER Russia, Vetka, 19th century Tempera on wood panel. Executed on a gold ground, border decorated with punched vegetal ornament. Rubbing; vertical crack restored. 39.6 x 33.7 cm. Saint Memnon lived as a hermit in the Egyptian desert and later became the head of a monastery. According to tradition, he was granted the gift of working miracles due to his ascetic way of life. He is said to have driven away a plague of locusts with a single word, caused a spring to well up in a barren place through prayer, and rescued sailors from drowning at sea.
