Description
A LARGE AND FINE ICON SHOWING CHRIST 'TSAR OF THE TSARS' Central Russian, Moscow, Circle of the Armoury Chamber, early 18th century Tempera on wood panel. The halo and garments made of silver, covered by a golden lacquer. The garments finely incised. He is also wearing a crown set with precious stones. The shading of the flesh tones in shades of beige, brown, and red. Partially restored. 42.7 x 34.4 cm. The icon 'Tsar of Tsars' is a significant depiction of Christ as the almighty ruler and King of heaven and earth. In one hand, he holds the scepter, while with the other, he blesses the world. His title 'Tsar of Tsars' emphasizes his absolute authority over all earthly and heavenly powers. This designation, rooted in the Orthodox tradition, highlights Christ's divine sovereignty over worldly rulers, including the Russian tsars, who were seen as earthly representatives of divine order. The icon served not only as a religious image but also as a symbol of the close relationship between Church and State in Orthodox Russia.
