TWO FLAT-BACK MANDOLINS German, first half to mid-20th century. Spruce; flat, teardrop-shaped body. Lengths: 58 cm and 62 cm. One flat-back mandolin featuring a soundhole, a pickguard with floral wood inlay, and elaborate star marquetry on the back. One flat-back mandolin featuring an openwork wood rosette, a dark-stained body, and a fabric carrying strap. Both configured for eight strings in four double courses. Some damage, rubbed and bumped; one mandolin has a fine crack in the soundboard below the bridge. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
