SARANGI WITH ELABORATE FIGURAL PAINTING North India, Rajasthan, 20th century Carved dark wood, skin-covered resonator, pegs for main and sympathetic strings. Length approx. 69.5 cm, width 26 cm. Entirely painted in polychrome with courtly figures, winged beings, and floral and ornamental borders in the style of Indian miniature painting. The sarangi is one of the most important bowed string instruments in North Indian art music and is highly prized for its expressive sound, which resembles the human voice. This specimen combines traditional construction with exceptionally rich polychrome painting in the style of Rajasthani or Mughal miniature painting. Minor damage, rubbing, and knocks in places.
