Description
AFGHAN TANBUR (ALSO TAMBUR) Afghanistan, 20th century Rounded wooden body with a flat wooden soundboard, small dot-like soundholes, long neck, wooden tuning pegs (side- and front-mounted), and tassel decoration. Length approx. 118 cm. This tanbur (also spelled tambur or tanboor) belongs to the family of Eastern long-necked lutes and is one of the oldest plucked instruments of the Near East. In Afghanistan, the tanbur holds an established place in traditional art and folk music; it is frequently played as a solo instrument or in ensemble with frame drums such as the daf. Shows some signs of wear and damage. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
