LUIGI FILANO Active c. 1820-1935, Naples EARLY ROMANTIC GUITAR Naples, c. 1825 Top made of fine-grained spruce, elaborately decorated with vine and foliage inlays (moti vegetali), original wooden case. L. H., case. Inscribed on the inside: 'Luigi Filano, Strada Speranzella, Napoli Anno 1825 N. 110'. A rare early Romantic guitar from the workshop of the Neapolitan luthier Luigi Filano, made around 1825. Filano came from a prominent family of luthiers. His workshop was located on Strada Speranzella in Naples, a center of Neapolitan instrument making. Partially restored and described; crack in the back.
