HISTORICIZING CITOLE AND BOW Nidderau, 20th century Spruce top with two openwork carved wooden rosettes, carved animal head at the end, four strings. Length approx. 53 cm. Inside: workshop label "Dieter Nöckel, 6369 Nidderau." Accompanied by a plug-in frog bow with dot eyes, partially preserved; frog and bow hair loose; length approx. 63.5 cm. The citola was a medieval stringed instrument, also known as a bowl-necked lute, which was widespread in Europe from the 13th to the 15th century and was played both by plucking and, on rare occasions, with a bow.
