Description
CHARANGO Andean region (Bolivia, Peru, or northern Argentina), mid-20th century. Painted wooden body, carved soundbox shaped like an armadillo, 10 bone tuning pegs, 10 strings, open pegbox with metal tuning mechanisms. Length 60.5 cm. The charango is one of the best-known plucked string instruments of the Andean region and is traditionally played in Bolivia, Peru, and northern Argentina. Historical examples were often crafted from an armadillo shell. Part. bumped and rubbed, rest. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
