LATE CLASSICISM CRADLE Probably Germany or Austria, circa 1780 Walnut, veneered and inlaid, gilded curved decorative moldings, ebonized moldings, lyre-shaped structures with decorative knobs, lockable rocking mechanism. H. 98, W. 112, W 56 cm. Exceptional late classicist cradle from around 1780-1800, whose elegant architectural form and fine craftsmanship suggest that it was made in a courtly or princely environment. The piece comes from the estate of the von Rantzow family, a historically significant Rhineland dynasty that was among the early silk importers to the Holy Roman Empire in the 18th century. According to the restorer, the crib can be identified as the princely cradle from Sollbrüggen Castle. Partially rest.
