Description
FINE WRITING DESK / STANDING SECRETARY Berlin, circa 1805/07 Poplar burl veneered on softwood and lime wood, fire-gilded bronze, on square feet. H. 160, W. 88, D. 43 cm. Front with three panels, hinged writing surface, interior in pear wood and ebony, interior in birch burl, palisander, boxwood, natural and stained maple, six marble columns grouped around a mirrored center compartment, various hidden drawers in Roentgen style. High-quality Berlin standing secretary desk of exceptional craftsmanship and design sophistication. The representative exterior effect of the finely selected poplar burl veneers is effectively accentuated by the fire-gilded bronze appliqués. Inside, an architecturally composed writing cabinet unfolds with marble columns, a mirrored back wall, and a rich combination of materials made from fine woods. The artistic construction with hidden drawers refers to the tradition of the Roentgen workshop and is one of the characteristic highlights of Berlin furniture art at the threshold from Classicism to Empire. The piece of furniture is illustrated several times in literature. Partially preserved, rest. Literature: Illustrated in Böhringer: Ikonen des Möbeldesigs um 1810, Düsseldorf 2007, p. 19; cf. Stiegel: Berliner Möbelkunst, Berlin 2003, p. 121. Expertise: Kunsthandel Georg Böhringer, Düsseldorf, 2009. Provenance: Acquired from Kunsthandel Böhringer - In private ownership in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2008.
