Description
RARE THONET CANAPÉ SOFA 'NO. 3567D' Vienna, around 1910 Beech wood, rounded backrest, curved sides, on six legs. H. 108, W. 45, D. 155, D. 49 cm. Marked 'Thonet' on the bottom, probably Otto Prutscher (1880-1949). This rare Thonet three-seater sofa No. 3567d is a remarkable example of the combination of industrial production and sophisticated Viennese design around 1910. The elegant sofa was probably made by Otto Prutscher (1880-1949), one of the leading designers of the Vienna Secession and an important representative of the Wiener Werkstätte, and designed for the prestigious Café Heinrichhof, which was located opposite the Vienna State Opera and was a meeting place for bourgeois society at the turn of the century. In this context, the sofa was more than just a seat-it functioned as part of a social ritual that helped shape the transition from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to modernity. Sofa No. 3567 belongs to the late creative phase of classic Thonet production, which at the beginning of the 20th century developed stylistically from the floral forms of Art Nouveau to clearer, more functional lines. Prutscher, an architect and designer from Josef Hoffmann's circle, pursued a holistic design approach in which furniture was always part of a larger overall design concept. The sofa is listed in the Thonet catalog under number 3567, with the variant 'd' showing the version without wickerwork for upholstery. Cover renewed. Literature: See Gebrüder Thonet Zentral Anzeiger No. 32, Vienna, 1911, p. 5. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin.
