Visualising movement and light through the interplay of structure and rhythm - this artistic impulse has permeated Günther Uecker's work since his early days. He achieved international fame as a member of the ZERO movement, whose aesthetic experiments with light, material and space made key contributions to post-war art from the late 1950s onwards. In the further course of his artistic career, Uecker increasingly turned to themes relating to people and their relationships - peace, spirituality, human rights and nature became the leitmotifs of his artistic and political commitment. It therefore seems only logical that, in 2012, the artist devoted himself to a central symbol of our global consciousness with the graphic Blue Planet: the earth as a habitat and a good worth protecting. The colour serigraph shows a circular composition in blue and black. The white of the sheet creates the impression of a luminous, pulsating body - poetically condensed in the centre, fragile and vulnerable at its edges. The work evokes movement and energy, but at the same time also threat and fragility. The apparent fervour of the motif is an appeal to the viewer's sense of responsibility. Blauer Planet is closely related to a monumental painting from 2011, which Uecker created as part of his cycle Geschriebene Bilder. The graphic concentrates on the expressive effect of colour - as an emotional and ethical statement. 'The most beautiful thing we have, a place of human preservation' - with these words, Uecker himself describes planet Earth. His serigraph Blue Planet is a striking example of how political aspirations and aesthetic power can form an inseparable unit in art.
