Louis Gurlitt is considered one of the leading German landscape painters of the 19th century. Born in Altona, which at the time was under Danish rule, he came from modest circumstances. His artistic talent was recognized early on and nurtured through instruction by Anton Carl Dusch and Günther Gensler. From 1832 to 1834, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was profoundly influenced by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and Johann Ludwig Lund-figures who played a decisive role in shaping his dedication to landscape painting. Early travels, especially to Norway, where he produced striking studies of nature, helped solidify his mature style. In 1842, he settled in Düsseldorf and became associated with the artists of the Düsseldorf School, including Andreas Achenbach and Carl Ferdinand Sohn. Over the following decades, Gurlitt traveled extensively throughout Europe and spent time living in both Rome and Vienna, maintaining close ties with the artistic circles of his era.
