PAUL VON TIESENHAUSEN 1837 Estonia - 1876 Munich LOW TIDE OFF CUXHAVEN, 1872 Oil on canvas. 78 × 154 cm (framed 91 × 166 cm). Signed and dated lower right. Verso: on the stretcher two labels in Hungarian: "Picture Gallery of the National Museum M.N.", inventory number 198; label of the National Picture Gallery with no. 2992. On the canvas a black stamp, only the word "Münche" legible. Frame. Paul von Tiesenhausen (1836/1837-1876) was a Baltic German painter known for his marine and landscape paintings. After his military service, during which he took part in the Crimean War, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and undertook study trips to Normandy and Italy. His oeuvre comprises an estimated 100 works, making paintings by Tiesenhausen rare on the art market. The present painting stands out for its representative large format and the complex, finely detailed composition featuring numerous ships and a wide panorama, marking it as a significant work within his oeuvre.
