Description
AFTER ERNST BARLACH 1870 Wedel - 1938 Rostock 'MOURNING' ('TRAUER') After the original from 1913 Bronze with light brown patina, on a rectangular plinth. H. 57 cm, W. 30 cm. Inscribed 'E. Barlach' and numbered '3/6' on the side; posthumous cast. A fully modeled depiction of a seated woman wearing a heavy, long garment and a voluminous cloak. The figure sits upright yet introspectively on a block-like seat; her arms hang at her sides, with her hands resting calmly upon or beside her knees. The austere rendering of the face, the angular, closed planes of the drapery, and the monumental simplification of the body's forms lend the work a poignant expression of mourning, serenity, and deep inward contemplation. A later 20th-century cast based on Ernst Barlach's model 'Mourning' (created in 1913). Literature: Cf. original in the catalogue raisonné Laur II 221.
