Description
ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active in the 19th/20th century PAIR OF VENETIAN 'CAVALLI' (HORSE HEADS AS GONDOLA FITTINGS) Bronze, dark patina, each on a spike, metal noseband, with acrylic glass base (11x35x12 cm). H. 34/34.5, W. 23/22.5, D. 4 cm, weight approx. 2.5 kg each. Two rare bronze horse heads in profile of Venetian origin, originally attached as ornamental fittings to the railing or bow of traditional gondolas. These animal depictions are characteristic of Venetian boat decoration, where they were also considered symbolic signs of protection and good luck. Partial loss of patina, traces of oxidation, the pins are heavily corroded by salt water, base with inclusions. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland.
