Description
GERMAN SCULPTOR Active in the early 20th century RELIEF: DEPICTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY ON THE 'CELSA' BELL Bronze, dark patina, relief. H. 48, W. 22, D. 3 cm, weight approx. After the Flemish model by Gerhard van Wou, original casting on the 'Celsa' bell in the belfry of St. Nicolai St. Nicolai (Hamburg-Altengamme). Relief cast made after the depiction of Mary on the famous Celsa bell in St. Nicolai, Hamburg. The iconographic model goes back to the Flemish bell founder Gerhard van Wou, one of the most important masters of the late Middle Ages. Van Wou created numerous monumental bells, including the world-famous Gloriosa in Erfurt Cathedral. The calm, dignified posture of the Mother of God and the clear, sculptural design are indicative of the high artistic quality of late Gothic bell decoration. Partial loss of patina.
