Description
ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active in the 19th/20th century MONUMENTAL SEATED HERMES FROM HERCULANEUM Bronze, dark patina. H. 116, w. 64, d. 108 cm. After the Greek sculptor Piston from the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum. Large-format, fully sculpted depiction of the seated Hermes, leaning slightly forward and resting his right hand on the rock. The messenger of the gods is depicted with his attributes, the winged shoes, in his left hand and remnants of the caduceus (Hermes' staff). Loss of patina, traces of oxidation due to weathering.
