Description
GERMAN SCULPTOR Active around 1930, probably in Berlin LARGE ICARUS Bronze, dark patina, on a rock-like and square plinth. H. 67, W. 61, D. 37 cm. Unsigned, probably a Berlin sculptor around 1930, circle of Arno Breker. Powerful, tense depiction of the winged Icarus: the male nude with resting, tense arms and the hint of a swing in his closed legs rises in a dynamic pose above a rock-like base. Particularly striking are the muscular tension of the body and the modeling of the outstretched wings. The figure is exemplary of the heroic style and artistic return to the ideals of antiquity in the 1930s. The aesthetic representation of the steeled male body was frequently taken up in the sculpture of that period. Partial loss of patina and some age-related oxidation marks, plinth probably added. Provenance: North Rhine-Westphalia
