FRENCH SCULPTOR Active circa 1800 'THE ABDUCTION' - MANTEL CLOCK TOPPER Fire-gilt bronze on a base. H. 39, W. 34, D. 15.5 cm. A dynamic, fully modeled equestrian group depicting a rider in Oriental attire and a turban on a rearing horse, holding a young woman-who appears to have fainted-in his arms. A saber and an axe lie at the horse's feet. Set upon a richly ornamented base featuring Neoclassical decorative friezes, palmette and acanthus motifs, and lion-head details. Likely originally intended as a figural topper or crowning element for a grand French mantel clock. Part. bumped and rubbed, loss of paint.
