Description
AGATHON LÉONARD 1841 Lille - 1923 Paris 'DANSEUSE AU COTHURNE' Bronze, gilt patina. H. 53, W. 30, D. 16 cm, weight approx. 11.74 kg. Signed on the back 'A. Léonard', foundry mark 'Susse Frères Editeurs Paris' and 'M' (chiseler Mangeno). Graceful depiction of a dancer in a long, flowing robe, standing with her arm raised and wearing antique stage boots, known as cothurni. The movement is both elegant and tense, the fabric modeled in rhythmic folds. Agathon Léonard became famous for his Art Nouveau dancers, especially his 1897 series Jeu de l'écharpe (Scarf Game), which was presented at the 1900 World's Fair. His works combine classical influences with the verve of the Belle Époque and the stylized elegance of Art Nouveau. Minimal loss of patina and some min. bumped.
