Description
ROBERT LE LORRAIN 1666 Paris - 1743 Paris (after) 'ANDROMEDA CHAINED TO THE ROCK' Bronze with light golden and dark patina, set on a naturalistically modeled rock base. H. 57.5, W. 37, D. 22 cm. Inscribed 'Girardon scpt.' on the plinth. A fully modeled depiction of the mythological princess Andromeda in a dramatic, dynamic pose, chained to the rock with one arm raised. The original model for this bronze was created by Robert Le Lorrain (1666-1743) in 1695/96; the famous version is currently held in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. RF 3399). The inscription 'Girardon scpt.' reflects the earlier attribution of the model to Le Lorrain's teacher, François Girardon (1628-1715); consequently, later reduced-scale casts of the motif were circulated under Girardon's name. Signs of wear and restoration; loss of patina; chains incomplete; arm reattached. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
