Description
A KO-BIZEN VASE Japan, late 18th/early 19th century Stoneware. H. 15.3 cm. The vase is of near-cylindrical form, slightly compressed, with a globular, obliquely flattened neck; the body is decorated with incised ornament and covered with an ash deposit glaze. On the base is a kama-shirushi in the form of an incised triangle. It is accompanied by a later wooden box, the lid inscribed "Ko-Bizen tsukubai hanaire" (Old Bizen water basin flower vase), the reverse inscribed "Edo makki no saku" (work from the late Edo period), further with three measurements and the kama-shirushi on the base, signed Katsura Matasaburo and kao. With traces of age and use. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
