Description
AN AKA-RAKU CHAWAN (TEA BOWL) Japan, Edo period Stoneware. H. 8 cm, D. 12 cm. The chawan is of tall, cylindrical form (han-tsutsugata) with vertical walls, set on a broad, rounded ring foot, the interior spirally turned. The light-coloured body is entirely covered with a matte, extremely thin whitish slip, over which is a slightly porous, crackled salmon-coloured glaze with areas of grey tonality and whitish clouding, leaving parts of the underside and the foot ring unglazed. The base bears the potter's seal "Raku," attributable to Sanyu (1685-1739), the 6th head of the Raku family. It is accompanied by a wooden box, the interior of the lid bearing an appraisal inscription confirming the attribution to Sanyu, with signature and Raku seal of the 10th head of the family, Tannyu (1795-1854), and a silk pouch (shifuku). With traces of age and use. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
